17.3.3: Al-Ayen Iraqi University – SDG 3 Progress Report (2024)
1. The Specialized Dental Teaching Hospital at Al-Ayen Iraqi University continues to deliver high-quality dental care to the people of Nasiriyah, supervised by a distinguished team of Iraqi and international doctors. This initiative supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by improving community health services and providing students with advanced clinical training.

2. The College of Health and Medical Technologies at Al-Ayen Iraqi University signed a twinning and cooperation agreement with Al-Furat Al-Awsat University to strengthen academic and scientific collaboration. The agreement focuses on enhancing education, research, and professional training, as well as exchanging expertise and scientific visits between the two institutions. 3. A joint volunteer initiative was organized by the Colleges of Pharmacy and Dentistry at Al-Ayen Iraqi University to visit the Elderly Care Home in Dhi Qar Governorate. The activity aimed to promote community service and health awareness, offering free medical consultations and dental checkups, as well as distributing flowers and essential health supplies to the residents. 4. The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, inaugurated the Teaching Hospital of Al-Ayen University in Dhi Qar Province, highlighting its role in advancing medical education and healthcare in Iraq. The hospital enhances practical training, research, and specialized services aligned with international standards. This initiative supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) by strengthening medical training and improving community health outcomes.

5. Dr. Abdul Rahman Y. Awda, the investor and consulting engineer of Al-Ayen Iraqi University Teaching Hospital, announced the hospital’s imminent opening in Nasiriyah on November 23, 2024, marking a major advancement in the southern region’s health sector. The 200-bed facility, built by Power China, the hospital is equipped with CT scanners and MRI machines powered by artificial intelligence, using the latest global version with a very high 3-Tesla architecture. It also includes highly advanced equipment for the early detection of breast cancer, as well as internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, and gynecology departments — all equipped with high-precision technologies. 6. Al-Ayen Iraqi University implemented a waste segregation system to enhance environmental sustainability and health safety practices across its facilities. The system includes separate bins for medical waste, biohazard waste, and general waste, ensuring proper disposal and minimizing environmental risks. This initiative supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting safe waste management and fostering a clean, sustainable campus environment.
7. Al-Ayen Iraqi University organized an awareness lecture on breast cancer as part of the Early Detection Week activities. The event, held by the Continuing Education Center in cooperation with the Dhi Qar Health Directorate and the Women’s Affairs Division, featured medical experts including Dr. Ibtidaa Mohsen Obeid, Dr. Enas Razzaq Kazem, and Environmental Toxicologist Dr. Mozhgan Asfahani. The lecture emphasized the importance of early detection, preventive measures, and recognizing warning signs to increase recovery chances. The Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign saw the highest participation (33%), followed by Drug Safety Awareness Week (27%), where students promoted medication safety. Dental Health Visits accounted for 22% of involvement, focusing on educating young students on oral hygiene. Additional projects included the Anesthesia Technology Department's poster presentations (16%) and student-led eye examinations (19%) in local schools, while the First Scientific Festival on Disease Physiology engaged 14% of students in disease awareness efforts.
