Al-Ayen Iraqi University – SDG 5 Progress Report (2024)

The Studies and Planning Department (and its subordinate Statistics Division) at Iraqi universities, including Al-Ayen Iraqi University, is the body directly responsible for collecting, classifying, analyzing, and publishing detailed statistical data. This division plays a pivotal role in statistics concerning graduation rates and gender comparison. The department's functions regarding graduation statistics and the comparison between female and male graduates (by gender) are divided into three main axes:

1. Data Collection and Classification

This stage is the foundation of the work, where raw data is collected and categorized:

- Detailed Data Collection: Collecting all data related to the numbers of graduates in undergraduate (and postgraduate) studies from colleges and scientific departments, with the necessity of classifying these numbers by:

  • Gender (Male/Female).
  • Scientific Department/Specific Specialization.
  • Study Stage (in case of failure or deferral).
  • Year of Graduation.

- Building and Updating Databases: Entering this detailed data into the Central University Statistics System (linked to the Ministry of Higher Education), ensuring the separation of female and male data within each specialization.

- Data Unification: Ensuring the unification of all statistics received from the university's various colleges before submitting them to the Ministry.

2. Analysis and Reporting

The collected data is used to make comparisons and issue official documents:

  • Preparation of the Annual University Statistics: Issuing tables and reports that include accurate statistics on the number of graduating students distributed by gender and by each college and scientific department, highlighting these numbers in the annual "University Statistics Booklet."
  • Analysis of Graduation Rates: Comparing the percentages and rates of success and graduation between female and male students in each scientific department (e.g., how many male graduates versus female graduates in the Computer Engineering Department or the Medicine Department).
  • Gender Indicators: Within the framework of the Ministry of Higher Education's directions, the department participates in preparing specific indicators for gender and sustainable development, which reflect the reality of female participation and excellence in the educational process and graduation.
  • Graduate Bulletin: Overseeing the Graduate Bulletin statistics, which documents the numbers and types of certificates awarded by colleges and gender.

3. Decision Support and Information Provision

The department is considered the official source of statistical data for internal and external bodies:

  • Provision to Higher Authorities: Sending all statistical tables and data related to graduates and their distribution by gender to the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (Department of Studies, Planning, and Follow-up).
  • Supporting Internal Departments: Providing the Women Empowerment Unit, the Quality Assurance Unit, and university leadership with the statistical data necessary to evaluate admission policies, monitor educational attrition (failure or dropout), and develop planning and development strategies.
  • Facilitating Research: Providing data and statistics to faculty members and postgraduate students conducting research that requires statistical comparisons between male and female graduates.
