Al-Ayen Iraqi University – SDG 11 Progress Report (2024) 

1. The Minister of Higher Education, Dr. Naeem Al-Aboudi, inaugurated the Teaching Hospital of Al-Ayen University in Dhi Qar Province, highlighting its role in advancing medical education and healthcare in Iraq. The hospital enhances practical training, research, and specialized services aligned with international standards. This initiative supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by strengthening medical training and improving community health outcomes.

2. Dr. Abdul Rahman Y. Awda, the investor and consulting engineer of Al-Ayen Iraqi University Teaching Hospital, announced the hospital’s imminent opening in Nasiriyah on November 23, 2024, marking a major advancement in the southern region’s health sector. The 200-bed facility, built by Power China, includes advanced operating rooms and cutting-edge cardiology, AI, and MRI technologies. This achievement supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) and and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by improving healthcare quality, advancing medical training, and integrating modern technology into Iraq’s health system.

3. Al-Ayen Iraqi University actively utilizes brownfield sites for development projects to promote sustainable land use and reduce environmental impact. For example, the university constructed a pedestrian bridge and a new annex building that houses several university formations, including the College of Health and Medical Technologies and various administrative departments. This project was developed on a previously abandoned area, effectively transforming unused land into functional educational infrastructure. Such initiatives demonstrate the university’s commitment to sustainable urban development and align with SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure).
