Al-Ayen Iraqi University – SDG 12 Progress Report (2024)

1. Introduction and Overview

This report provides an overview of the research contributions from Al-Ayen Iraqi University (AUIQ) in 2024, specifically aligned with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12: Responsible Consumption and Production. SDG 12 aims to ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, promoting resource efficiency and reducing waste. The following sections outline key research topics and subject areas that align with this goal, along with the total number of related publications.

2. Detailed SDG Conteibutions

Initiatives and Activities

Al-Ayen Iraqi University implemented a waste segregation system to enhance environmental sustainability and health safety practices across its facilities. The system includes separate bins for medical waste, biohazard waste, and general waste, ensuring proper disposal and minimizing environmental risks. This initiative supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 13 (Climate Action) by promoting safe waste management and fostering a clean, sustainable campus environment.

The Faculty of Health and Medical Technologies, in cooperation with the University's Continuing Education Center, held a scientific seminar on protecting the atmospheric environment via closed-circuit television. The seminar featured a presentation by Assistant Professor Dr. Ali Al-Ashar from the Lebanese University. Dr. Al-Ashar addressed the fact that the responsibility for preserving the environment rests on everyone—individuals, groups, and institutions. He acknowledged that this may not always be easy to implement, as the necessary measures to protect the environment may conflict with human interests and the financial gains of institutions. He emphasized the necessity of employing the right tools and sound logic, establishing incentives to encourage committed institutions, and enacting laws that support environmental protection. This, he explained, is essential to achieving optimal cooperation among all segments of society.

Al-Ayen Iraqi University has held numerous workshops and scientific seminars on environmental conservation, climate change, and the importance of renewable and sustainable energy in protecting the environment and preventing pollution.

6. Al-Ayen Iraqi University and its Teaching Hospital have introduced new electric fire safety and emergency response vehicles to enhance safety and sustainability across their facilities. These environmentally friendly vehicles are equipped with advanced firefighting tools and systems, ensuring quick and effective response while reducing carbon emissions. This initiative supports SDG 7 (Affordable and Clean Energy), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) by promoting clean energy use, improving safety infrastructure, and fostering a sustainable and secure environment for education and healthcare.

7. Al-Ayen Iraqi University Signs a Contract with the Central Recycling and Treatment Plant to Promote Environmental Sustainability

In line with its commitment to implementing best environmental practices and promoting the principles of sustainability, Al-Ayen University has signed a contract with the Central Recycling and Treatment Plant, located in Basra Governorate, and Al-Jawhara Paper Recycling and Manufacturing Plant , located in Babylon Governorate,  to manage and treat the university’s waste, including food and paper waste. This collaboration aims to convert waste materials into eco-friendly products, contributing to the preservation of natural resources and the reduction of environmental impact. The initiative reflects the university’s dedication to its social responsibility and its support for national efforts toward environmental protection and sustainable development.
