The Petroleum Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, Al-Ayen University, represented by Dr. Abdul-Hussein N. Al-Atabi participated in the workshop organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) – Central Region, under the patronage of Deputy Prime Minister for Energy Affairs and Minister of Oil Hayyan Abdul-Ghani. The workshop, held at the Babylon Hotel in Baghdad, was titled "The Future of the Oil Industry in Iraq."
The workshop witnessed broad participation from Iraqi and international oil companies. The sessions on the second day – in which the Petroleum Engineering Department participated – addressed important scientific topics focusing on carbon capture (CO₂) research and enhanced oil recovery (EOR) processes, in addition to discussing ways to increase and support oil production in the southern, central, and northern oil fields.
During his participation, Dr. Al-Atabi presented a scientific paper discussing the potential for utilizing some shallow oil reservoirs containing heavy crude oil in central and southern Iraq, with an API gravity of less than 18, such as the Lower Fars reservoir. He explained the possibility of linking their production to Iraqi refineries that possess specialized units for processing and refining heavy crude oil, such as the Karbala refinery.
This participation reflects the College of Engineering at Al-Ayen University's commitment to strengthening scientific and professional cooperation with oil institutions and research centers, and to contributing to national efforts to develop the oil and energy sector in Iraq.
