Nasiriyah Central Prison announced the opening of a university education center for inmates in cooperation with Al-Ayen Iraqi University after granting 50 study seats to inmates.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice for Administrative and Financial Affairs, Dr. Burhan Mazhar Al-Qaisi, the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research and the President of Dhi Qar University, Prof. Dr. Kamal H. Yasser, the Deputies of Al-Ayen Iraqi University for Scientific Affairs Asst. Prof. Dr. Haider A. Marhoun, and for Administrative Affairs Asst. Prof. Dr. Atheer Youssef, a number of members of the University Council, and a number of officials and specialists.
Dr. Al-Qaisi confirmed that this initiative comes within the memorandum of cooperation between the Ministries of Justice and Higher Education, and aims to provide university education opportunities for inmates, as fifty study seats have been allocated in the specializations of law, physical education, and English language, under the supervision of specialized professors from Al-Ayen Iraqi University.
Dr. Al-Qaisi added that the project reflects the Ministry of Justice’s commitment to providing an integrated correctional environment for inmates, as education contributes to their rehabilitation and empowerment cognitively and professionally, which enhances their chances of integration into society after the end of their sentences. He also stressed that education is one of the most important means of achieving societal reform and reducing recidivism rates. This project is the first of its kind in Nasiriyah Central Prison, and embodies the government’s vision to promote education within correctional institutions as part of its strategy to rehabilitate inmates and prepare them for a productive life after their release.
