Al-Ayen Iraqi University Progress - SDG 3 Progress Report

3.3.5:  Mental health support for students

Al-Ayen Iraqi University is actively committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of its students through various initiatives aimed at raising awareness and providing the necessary resources offered by the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Department at the university and its colleges, as detailed in the provided links.

1. The Continuing Education Center, in cooperation with the College of Engineering at our university, organized a workshop entitled "Engaging in Rejecting Violence and Spreading Legal Awareness to Combat the Illicit Proliferation of Weapons." The workshop was presented by Professor Dr. Jalal Shanta Jabr from the College of Education, who addressed the types of violence and their negative effects on society, as well as the important role the university plays in confronting this phenomenon through awareness campaigns and the dissemination of legal knowledge. Dr. Jalal highlighted the significant dangers of the illicit proliferation of weapons and its detrimental impact on community safety, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between various academic and community entities to combat this phenomenon by raising awareness and enhancing legal understanding among individuals. This effort contributes to SDG 3, SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 16.

2. The Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Unit at the College of Dentistry has begun implementing its plan for the 2024-2025 academic year. The unit's head, Assistant Lecturer Mustafa Al-Ziyadi, delivered awareness and guidance lectures to our dear students. These lectures aim to connect with students, listen to their academic problems and the difficulties they face, and offer appropriate solutions. This effort contributes to SDG 3, SDG 4 (Quality Education).

3. As part of the Iraqi Anti-Drug Week activities, the Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Division at the College of Dentistry organized an intensive awareness campaign for the college's students. The campaign focused on highlighting the devastating effects of drugs on the individual and society, with the aim of raising students' awareness of the dangers of this scourge.

4. The Psychological Counseling Division, in cooperation with the Continuing Education Center, organized a training course entitled "Activating the Role of Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance in Public and Private Universities" from October 29 to 31, 2024, in the Continuing Education Hall at the university's main campus. The course targeted directors of psychological counseling units in the university's colleges, as well as heads and members of psychological counseling committees in the departments. The course was presented by Dr. Siham Abdul-Hadi Al-Dakhili, a faculty member at Thi-Qar University, along with Dr. Jalal Shanta and Dr. Moudhi Lafteh Matar Al-Jashami, who discussed methods and mechanisms for activating the role of psychological counseling in supporting students and developing a positive educational environment within universities.

5. The Psychological Counseling and Guidance Division at Al-Ayen Iraqi University of Education in Iraq held a Psychological Counseling and Educational Guidance Week during the last week of November, in accordance with the directives of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research. This initiative recognizes the significant role of psychological and educational counseling in promoting students' mental health and ensuring their academic and social stability. The week included a variety of activities, such as interactive workshops and awareness lectures presented by experts in mental health and self-development, as well as individual and group counseling sessions for students. The week also aimed to highlight the importance of educational guidance in fostering positive values and developing personal and academic skills.
