AUIQ Smoke-free Campus policy
1. Objectives
While respecting individuals’ rights, we are committed to reducing exposure to tobacco smoke and providing support for those who wish to quit smoking. The institution will:
- Protect students, staff, and visitors from the harmful effects of tobacco smoke.
- Offer smoking cessation resources for those who wish to stop smoking.
This policy reflects our commitment to fostering a healthier campus environment by mitigating the risks associated with tobacco use.
2. Policy Statement
Al-Ayen Iraqi University is a smoke-free campus. Smoking, including the use of all tobacco products and e-cigarettes, is prohibited on all university-owned or -controlled properties, including indoor and outdoor spaces, parking areas, sidewalks, and campus vehicles.
3. Scope
This policy applies to all individuals on university property, including but not limited to students, faculty, staff, contractors, vendors, and visitors.
4. Definitions
- Smoking: The act of inhaling, exhaling, burning, or carrying any lighted or heated cigar, cigarette, pipe, or any other tobacco product, including electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS), commonly known as e-cigarettes.
- Tobacco Products: Includes cigarettes, cigars, pipes, hookahs, all forms of smokeless tobacco, e-cigarettes, and other vapor-producing devices.
- University Property: All buildings, facilities, grounds, vehicles, and spaces owned, leased, or controlled by Al-Ayen Iraqi University.
Scope
- This policy applies to all students, faculty, staff, contractors, and visitors on campus.
- Smoking is prohibited on all university properties, indoors and outdoors, including campus vehicles.
- Designated smoking areas, strategically located to limit exposure to secondhand smoke, are the only exceptions.
Compliance Guidelines
- All students, staff, contractors, and visitors are expected to adhere to this policy.
- Supervisors will counsel employees on health and safety benefits if violations occur and discuss available cessation support. Repeated violations may lead to disciplinary action.
- Students will receive guidance from their academic advisors upon policy violation, with repeated breaches subject to further disciplinary action.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Campus leadership will ensure the policy is followed and provide cessation resources.
- All community members are responsible for promoting and respecting the smoke-free policy by advising visitors or newcomers of the policy and encouraging compliance.
Communication and Awareness
- A copy of this policy will be provided to all new students and staff during orientation.
- The policy will be accessible online, and any updates will be communicated promptly to the university community.
- Clear and visible “No Smoking” signs will be posted throughout campus, especially at building entrances, indoor and outdoor gathering areas, and parking facilities..
Policy Monitoring and Review
- This policy will be reviewed annually to assess its effectiveness and updated as needed. Feedback from the campus community will be considered for any revisions or improvements.
